Francesco Cavalli

Francesco Cavalli

17th-Century Italian Baroque Composer and Opera Pioneer

Francesco Cavalli was an Italian composer of the early Baroque period, renowned for his contributions to the development of opera. Born Pietro Francesco Caletti-Bruni in 1602, he later adopted the name of his patron, Venetian nobleman Federico Cavalli. Cavalli became a prominent figure in the world of Venetian opera and served as the organist at St. Mark's Basilica. He composed over 30 operas, many of which are considered keystones in the history of the genre. His operas are known for their expressive music and for helping to establish the dominance of opera in Venice during the 17th century. Cavalli's influence extended beyond his lifetime, with his works being revived and appreciated by later generations for their historical significance and artistic merit.
