Domenico Gallo

Domenico Gallo

Italian Baroque Composer and Violinist

Domenico Gallo (1730-1768) was an Italian composer of the Baroque era, though not much is known about his life and career. He is often confused with the more famous Baldassare Galuppi due to a misattribution by the music publisher Jean-Baptiste Venier in the 19th century. Gallo's music, particularly the 12 Trio Sonatas, came to light when Stravinsky used themes from these sonatas, believing them to be composed by Pergolesi. The sonatas are characterized by their elegant and clear melodic lines, typical of the galant style that sought to move away from the complexity of late Baroque music. Despite the confusion over their authorship, Gallo's works are appreciated for their charm and craftsmanship. However, beyond these sonatas and a few other compositions, little else is known about his output or influence on the musical world of his time.
