He was successful as a composer at his debut in Cologne in 1956 with the work Zwei Stücke, and his work has been performed by Pierre Boulez, among others. He has also written music for several films and TV series, such as Hemsöborna and Röda Rummet. Bo Nilsson was an honorary doctor at Luleå University of Technology.
