Bessie Smith

Bessie Smith

Empress of the Blues

Bessie Smith, often referred to as the "Empress of the Blues," was a preeminent blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. Born on April 15, 1894, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, she began her career as a street performer before rising to national prominence. Smith's powerful voice and emotionally charged performances made her one of the most popular and influential singers of her time. She signed with Columbia Records in the early 1920s and quickly became a leading artist in the genre, recording numerous hits that have since become blues standards.
