Aubrey Brain

British horn player and teacher. Born 12 July 1893 in London, England, UK – Died 21 September 1955. In 1911 he was appointed Principal Horn of The New Symphony Orchestra Of London, and in 1912 he went on The London Symphony Orchestra's tour of the United States (Principal Horn, 1912-1929). He played horn in The Band Of The Welsh Guards until 1920. Aubrey was appointed First Horn of the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1922. He then joined the BBC Wireless Symphony Orchestra when it was formed in 1927, and became Principal Horn of the BBC Symphony Orchestra when it made its debut in 1930; he remained there until illness caused his premature retirement in 1943. His son Dennis Brain arranged for him to play with the Philharmonia Orchestra as 4th horn from October 1948, and until May 1950 he played fairly regularly with them. In 1923 he became Professor of Horn at the Royal Academy of Music, where his son Dennis was among his students. Brother of Alfred Brain. He married Marion Brain in 1914. They had two sons, Leonard Brain and Dennis Brain.
