Al Bowlly

Al Bowlly

1930s British Jazz and Dance Band Singer

Al Bowlly was a Mozambican-born British singer and jazz guitarist who became one of the most popular vocalists in England during the 1930s. Born on January 7, 1898, in Lourenço Marques, Portuguese East Africa (now Maputo, Mozambique), he moved to London in the late 1920s after a series of engagements across several continents. Bowlly's smooth tenor voice and his ability to croon made him a star of the dance band era, and he worked with prominent bandleaders such as Roy Fox, Ray Noble, and Lew Stone.
