The latest installment of the Magnetic Eye Redux series is dedicated to one of the milestones of the grunge era: a number of artists from the doom and stoner underground reinterpret Alice in Chains' Dirt, a nightmare set to the theme of drug addiction and inner darkness. The similarities between grunge and the evolution of stoner sludge metal can be traced particularly in this milestone, which in the early 1990s completed a cultural shift from mindless hair metal to the rawer, dirtier, more authentic material that would become the dominant style of popular hard music.
