Now, thanks to the people at Concord Music Group who gave me the opportunity to remaster these albums, I can present my versions of the music on CD using modern technology. I remember those sessions well, I remember how the musicians wanted to sound, and I remember their reactions to the playbacks. Today I feel strongly that I am their messenger."-Rudy Van Gelder. Here is one of the musical greats of the 20th century, standing over the precipice of greatness. Between the spring of 1957 and the winter of 1958, when Lush Life was recorded, the music of tenor saxophonist John Coltrane (1926-1967) evolved in giant strides, thanks in large part to a six-month stint with Thelonious Monk in 1957, which was credited with sharpening Coltrane's harmonic conception and thrilling attack. Lush Life includes Coltrane's first recordings as sole leader, his first appearances as the leader of a piano-less trio, and one of his first extended ballads, the dazzling title track by Billy Strayhorn. We also hear him leading a quartet and quintet with pianist Red Garland, joined by trumpeter Donald Byrd on "Lush Life."
