That's reason enough to bring together the blues rocker's best songs on 2 CDs under the title "The Ultimate Collection 1968-2003", creating a musical bridge between past and present. This is a superb Best Of, containing for the first time all of COCKER's hits from the last three decades (including those from the Universal era).About the man: On May 20, 1944, one of the toughest and most distinctive voices in show business - JOE COCKER - saw the light of day in a Sheffield hospital. Seventeen years later, COCKER leads a double life: by day he's a gas man, while by night he performs in Sheffield pubs as Vance Arnold with his band the Avengers. The following year, Joe and his new band (JOE COCKER Big Blues) released their first single, a cover of the Beatles' "I'll Cry Instead". His big breakthrough came with another Beatles cover, "With A Little Help From My Friends", which became a number one in the UK and a hit in the rest of Europe.He broke through in the US in 1969 after appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show. In the same year, he performed at many festivals including Woodstock, where a live version of "With A Little Help From My Friends" was recorded. In the early 1970s, Joe had major problems with alcohol and drugs. He didn't record anything new for a few years, but toured constantly to pay the bills. In the late 70s he hit rock bottom and things started to improve. With 1984's "Civilized Man" he returned to the top and subsequent albums made him a superstar again. In 1994, JOE COCKER is one of the few to perform at Woodstock for a second time. Since the mid-90s, however, he's tamed himself a bit. His albums now sell themselves and he is assured of gold status before release thanks to pre-orders. One more thing is for sure: this greatest hits compilation is a must for COCKER fans and will also please anyone interested in music!
