Three decades ago, in the summer of 1976, there was a band and an album simply called Boston. The debut album, which sold 17 million copies, and its 1978 follow-up, Don't Look Back, which sold 7 million, remain two of the most enigmatic cases of the modern rock era. Wrongly hailed as paragons of so-called "corporate rock", they were in fact the same basement recordings that their mastermind Tom Scholz presented as demos. Their commercial release fooled corporate executives in one of rock's biggest scams. Thirty years later, these tapes have been digitally remastered - for the first time by Scholz himself - and the secrets of Boston and Don't Look Back have been made available so that history can be revisited. Nearly 25 million copies later, Scholz and his key collaborator, singer Brad Delp, have had the last laugh at the irony that critics disparage Boston for the grandiosity of its production. "This demo and subsequent album stood the disco-crazy music industry on its head, broke every known rule and succeeded in the world of rock 'n' roll," Scholz writes. Boston was in the right place at the right time as an alternative to disco and the nascent punk rock movement of 1976. The album, which was certified gold on the Billboard Albums Chart a month after its release and platinum a month later, spent a solid two-and-a-half years on the charts and spawned the hits "More Than A Feeling," "Long Time" and "Peace Of Mind."
